Origins
Sega started a really long time ago, in 1940, when it was called Standard Games. It began in Hawaii and made coin-operated games for military bases. In 1952, the company moved to Japan and changed its name to Service Games of Japan.
In Tokyo, two American guys named Martin Bromley and Richard Stewart began a new company called Nihon Goraku Bussan on June 3, 1960. This company later became Sega when it bought the stuff from Service Games of Japan. Isn’t that cool?
Now, we can’t forget about another important guy, David Rosen. He had a company in Japan called Rosen Enterprises, which mostly worked with slot machines and jukeboxes. Rosen Enterprises and Sega joined together in 1965 to create a bigger and better company called Sega Enterprises, Ltd. That’s the Sega we all know and love today!
Originally, Sega focused on making coin-operated arcade games. They started with a game called Periscope in 1966, which became a huge hit. This success made Sega want to create more arcade games and eventually led them to create video games for us to play at home! How awesome is that?

Footnotes
Sega In Japanese – The Genesis Era
Back in the late 80s and early 90s, we had an amazing game console called the Sega Genesis. In Japan, it was known as the Mega Drive. It was a big deal because it was a part of the fourth generation era of gaming consoles. This console was our go-to place for the best video games during that time.
When the Mega Drive was released in Japan on October 29, 1988, people were excited about the advanced technology it had. It later came to North America, renamed as the Sega Genesis, and we couldn’t wait to see what it had to offer. With its cool hardware, the Genesis allowed us/ to play smoother and better-looking games. The graphics were a big step forward from what we had before.
In addition to the console itself, Sega later introduced the CD-ROM technology to enhance the gaming experience. This allowed us to play games with better graphics and sounds. It also let game developers create bigger and more complex games.
Here are some of the coolest things about the Genesis:
- 16-bit graphics: Made our games look really good compared to older consoles
- CD-ROM: Let us play games with better animation and music
- Variety of games: Tons of awesome games were available, like Sonic the Hedgehog and Street Fighter
We loved playing games on the Genesis because it was cutting-edge for its time. All our favorite titles back then, like Sonic the Hedgehog, became even more epic because of the advanced technology. And for us kids, the Sega Genesis was an essential part of our childhood. It created unforgettable memories and brought us hours of gaming fun.

The Saturn and Dreamcast Days
Hey, pals! Let’s talk about a cool part of Sega’s history: the time when they made the Saturn and Dreamcast consoles. Back in the 1990s, Sega was one of the biggest names in video games, competing with another famous company called Nintendo.
In 1994, Sega released the Sega Saturn console, and it was pretty unique because it had two CPUs and eight processors! This made it super powerful back then. A little while later, in 1995, Nintendo came out with a new console called the Nintendo 64. We all know that competition can be tough, and this was no exception. Sega was working hard to keep up.
But here’s the thing, friends: making awesome consoles and games is expensive! Sometimes, even if the games and consoles are cool, a company might face financial issues. Sadly, that’s what happened to Sega while they were making the Saturn. They had some financial losses because of the tough competition with the Nintendo 64.
But guess what? Sega didn’t give up! In 1998, they released another amazing console called the Sega Dreamcast. This console was super cool too, and it had some fun games like “Power Stone,” “Shenmue,” “Jet Set Radio,” and “Soul Calibur.” People loved playing these games, and many remember the Dreamcast fondly.
So, even though Sega had some tough times with the Saturn and Dreamcast, they still gave us fun memories and cool games to play. And that, friends, is a bit about the Saturn and Dreamcast days!
Arcade Impact
Back in the day, Sega was a big name in the world of arcade games. We remember running around playing their awesome games in places like Tokyo. Sega’s arcades were not just filled with fun games, but also featured some really smart technology. They had a major impact on how people enjoyed spending their free time.
We all know that Sega has a long history in hardware development. They created some of the coolest gaming systems to run their games. These machines had eye-catching lights and sounds that really made the experience more exciting.
In Tokyo, Sega was known for having some of the best gaming centers around. People would visit from all over to play their favorite games, and even make new friends. These arcades were not just about having fun; they also brought people together, making their time in the city even more enjoyable.
The hardware that Sega developed also had a lasting influence on other gaming companies. Some might say they set the bar high with their creative arcade machines. Who can forget the classic games like Sonic the Hedgehog that made us all want to play even more?
So, if we think about it, Sega has really touched our lives in many ways. Not only did they make some super cool games, but they also built great arcade spaces and incredible hardware that changed the gaming world for the better.

Sega in Today’s Gaming Industry
Hey, let’s talk about Sega! You know, they were really famous back in the ’90s with their Sega Genesis console. Nowadays, they might not be making consoles anymore, but they’re still part of today’s gaming industry!
We’re seeing Sega Corporation, which is headquartered in Japan, continue to create fun video games that we all enjoy. They also have companies like Sega of America and Sega Europe that help them get their games out to people all around the world. Also, they are part of a bigger company called Sega Sammy Holdings.
One cool thing we noticed is that Sega’s old arcades are making money again in Japan. These arcades are where you can play all sorts of fun games and have a blast. The new owners recently announced that the arcades made a profit of ¥3.175 billion! That’s a lot of money!
Nowadays, Sega also makes pachinko terminals and is thinking about entering the online gaming market. Pachinko is a popular game in Japan, and it’s like combining a slot machine with a pinball machine.
So, even though Sega isn’t as huge as they were in the ’90s, they’re still a big part of today’s gaming industry. They keep making fun games and entertaining us, just like they did years ago!
